Master Gunnery Sergeant Flaherty was born in 1980 and raised in Washington Township, NJ. He joined the Marine Corps Delayed Entry Program in September, 1997 and served with Bulk Fuel Co C (-), Folsom, PA in the Category P Program before attending then graduating Recruit Training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, SC in September 1998.


Following Recruit Training, Marine Combat Training, and MOS School, he was assigned to Marine Air Group-49, Marine Air Logistics Squadron-49, Detachment B in 1999. During his tour, Master Gunnery Sergeant Flaherty served as a Help Desk technician, then as a Maintenance and Customer Service Division Noncommissioned Officer in charge.


In August 2004, Master Gunnery Sergeant Flaherty served in Operation Iraqi Freedom with Marine Aerial Refueler Transport Squadron 452 (-)(REIN) where he served as the technical support specialist for the squadron providing network and technology support.


Ordered to Quantico, VA in 2006, Master Gunnery Sergeant Flaherty served as the Vulnerability Management Technician with the Marine Corps Network Operations Security Center.


In September 2010, Master Gunnery Sergeant Flaherty reported to 4th Force Headquarters Group, 4th Civil Affairs Group, Detachment 3 as a Team Chief which deployed for Operation Enduring Freedom in Musa Qala, Helmand Province, Afghanistan.


Master Gunnery Sergeant Flaherty joined an Individual Augmentee billet with U.S. Central Command serving as the Civil-Military Operations Chief for Operation Inherent Resolve from May to November 2015. He served as the Headquarters Detachment Chief and the G-9 Operations Chief, 2d Civil Affairs Group, Washington, D.C. Presently, Master Gunnery Sergeant Flaherty serves as the G-9 Planner Chief and Civil-Military Operations senior enlisted advisor at 3d Civil Affairs Group, Great Lakes, IL.


Master Gunnery Sergeant Flaherty’s personal decorations include the Joint Service Commendation Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, and the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal.


Master Gunnery Sergeant Flaherty lives in San Antonio, Texas and has two children: Jimmy II (10), and Kyra (9).
